Household batteries in recycling
Carney’s Waste Disposal and the Resort Municipality of Whistler have started a collection program for household batteries, the first program of its kind in the corridor.
There are two bright yellow drums for batteries at both the Nesters and Function Junction recycling depots.
The collected batteries will be shipped to an Aldergrove, B.C. company called Nu-Life Industries, where they will be disposed of and zinc oxide and manganese dioxide recovered from the waste. Mercury and other materials are also disposed of safely.

Altitude tickets on sale
Tickets for Altitude Twelve, Whistler’s gay and lesbian ski week, went on sale online last week at www.outontheslopes.com. People who book early will be eligible for discounts and other benefits.
The event producers are offering 10 per cent off all event tickets, when people book accommodation at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler and Summit Lodge. In addition, customers will receive free tickets to the Producer’s Cocktail Party and a mountain-side barbecue, and will receive a souvenir CD.
Event producers are also urging people to buy tickets to the main events of Altitude, including the Tea Dance at the Roundhouse Restaurant and the Snow Ball dance part early, as these events traditionally sell out.
The Web site also includes a complete list of scheduled events.
Altitude, put together by Out On The Slopes Productions, attracts more than 3,000 guests from across North America.
Power producers host conference
The top senior executives in Western Canada’s electricity industry will speak at the first conference of the Independent Powwer Producers association of B.C. (IPPBC) at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver from Oct. 23 to 25. The list of speakers includes Colin Clark of the Great Lakes Power Corporation, Hal Kvisle of TransCanada, Ross Keating of Canadian Hydro Developers Ltd., Dr. Albert Maringer of Siemens Canada Ltd., Stephen P. Reynolds of Puget Energy Inc., and Steve Snyder of TransAlta.
Other speakers include Richard Neufeld, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Larry Bell of B.C. Hydro and Powerex, Bob Reid of the B.C. Transmission Corporation, Chief Ian Campbell of Squamish Nation, and Robert Hobbs of the B.C. Utilities Commission.
