Two speakers for first Women of Whistler meeting

The Women of Whistler business association resumes its fall and winter meeting program on Tuesday, Sept. 28.

Whistler businesswoman Kathy Barnett, director of the Women’s Enterprise Society of B.C. , and Janet Bride, business analyst with Community Futures Development Corporation in Squamish will address the group.

The speakers will profile the various programs available through each organization to assist people starting, purchasing or growing a business. Services include financing, business counseling, training, and establishing community alliances and partnerships.

The meeting will be held at the newly opened Four Season’s Resort in Whistler. Registration 6 p.m.; program begins 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments served.

The Women of Whistler networking group provides an opportunity for Whistler businesswomen to network, gain knowledge and share ideas in a friendly relaxed environment.

Seminar for home buyers

Sea to Sky Real Estate, the Whistler Housing Authority, Garibaldi Mortgage and Race & Co. will present a free home-buying seminar Tuesday, Sept. 21 at Myrtle Philip school.

The seminar is geared toward first-time home buyers, but anyone interested is welcome. However, space is limited so reservations are required.

Attendees will learn legal and financial requirements to purchase free market and market restricted real estate. The evening will consist of each sponsor speaking about their area of expertise with question and answer periods after each speaker.

The seminar runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Alex Philip room at the school.

CFOW launches employee deduction program

The Community Foundation of Whistler is launching an employee deduction program, which will provide community-minded employees an opportunity to support the community where they live and raise their families.

As part of the new program, employees will have an opportunity to designate their donation to the Whistler Employee Fund, the Pemberton Employee Fund or the Squamish Employee Fund. Each of the new employee endowment funds will have an advisory committee which will provide recommendations into how the income generated is granted in each community.

According to John Nadeau, Chair of the Program Committee, "We’ve been working with a group of employer representatives over the past year to design a simple process where employees will sign on through their employer and select a specific amount to be automatically deducted from their pay each pay period."

The CFOW is currently training presenters who will be ready to speak to interested workplaces starting later this month.

Founded in 1999, the Community Foundation of Whistler currently manages 18 funds which total over $1.9 million. The investment earnings on funds donated by residents, businesses and other charities are directed to projects that help improve the quality of community life in the Sea to Sky corridor.

On Wednesday, Sept. 15, Monica Patten, President and CEO of Community Foundations of Canada, will be the speaker at the Whistler Chamber of Commerce Luncheon. Interested individuals and organizations are invited to attend the session to learn more about the role Community Foundations make in strengthening their communities.
