Former Whistler Mountain Ski Corporation president, and current Aspen Ski Company CEO, Patrick O’Donnell has some interesting things to say about the merger mania going on in the mountain resort industry. In the latest issue of Snow Country magazine O’Donnell says: "Anyone with enough money can build playgrounds on tops of mountains. Money and technology are moulding carbon copy ski experiences. But no one else has four unique and pristine mountains and the incredible town of Aspen with its cultural mix of music, art and dance, and the Aspen Institute." Ban the board There’s a new movement at Vail — albeit a small one — to ban snowboarding from certain parts of the mountain. A woman named Cathy Douglas has started a petition to ban boards and has met with Vail management to discuss the idea. Management has been non-committal. While Douglas’ efforts are a long shot to succeed, at best, they do bring to mind resort consultant Myles Rademan’s recent comment about how some people in Vail feel they can control things: Rademan said that in Vail they consider death not a certainty but an option. Squamish soliciting art works The Squamish Public Library is canvassing artists and crafts people for works they would like to display in the library’s foyer gallery. The new Squamish library opened in October, providing more space and modern facilities. Among the library’s features is a large entrance foyer where arts and crafts can be displayed. A selection committee was formed to facilitate the selection, display and monthly rotation of selected pieces. Starting in January, monthly juried exhibitions will be held. Submissions must include a selection of high quality slides or photographs representative of current work, a biography and artist’s statement. Submissions should be sent to The Foyer Gallery, Squamish Public Library, 37907 Second Ave., P.O. Box 1039, Squamish, B.C. V0N 3G0.
