More than $10,000 was raised for local athletic groups at the 14th annual Mouton Cadet Spring Festival April 20-21. Nearly $4,000 from Sunday’s restaurant race went to The KidSport Fund. Three local restaurants, Caramba!, Bear Foot Bistro and the Trattoria, donated their winnings to the KidSport Fund. Garfinkel’s turned their winnings over to Sport BC for amateur ski racing in Whistler. The Ski Canada team, which won the media division, donated their $500 prize to the Whistler Mountain Ski Club. More than $2,500 from Saturday afternoon’s reception at the Delta was raised for the Dave Murray Foundation, which supports junior ski racing in Canada. A raffle for a trip for two to Paris raised $3,300 for the James Hustvedt Fund, which will go toward the purchase of ski equipment for the Whistler Disabled Ski Club. Whistler’s role as part of the Howe Sound watershed is the focus of a day-long workshop at Dusty’s in Whistler Creek May 25. The Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment and Whistler Mountain Ski Corporation are hosting the Howe Sound Watershed Stewardship Project workshop. The workshop will focus on stewardship issues of jurisdiction, water quality and quantity, sustainability, biodiversity and private property rights. As well, zoning, environmental bylaws, the Official Community Plan and areas designated as Environmentally Sensitive will be discussed. The Howe Sound Watershed Stewardship Project is an initiative of the Bowen Island Forest and Watershed Management Society, a non-profit group dedicated to raising community awareness and action regarding the importance of forests and their interconnectedness to water quality and supply. The workshop is free and runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A short field trip to Whistler Creek will be part of the workshop. Registration is limited to 40 people.
