The Whistler Fish Enhancement group has been awarded a $10,000 provincial grant to restore fish streams in the area. The group is made up of the Rotary Club, the municipality and the Whistler Angling Club. It is the only one of 51 community groups approved for grants which will be restoring trout, rather than salmon, streams. Money from the grant will primarily be used to come up with a five-year restoration plan. The group hopes to have a plan ready by the fall. The Whistler group will then be eligible for a grant of up to $30,000 to help implement that plan. Already the group has cleaned up the River of Golden Dreams, Whistler, Millar, and 21-mile Creeks and other local streams. Don MacLaurin, chairman of the Fish Enhancement Group, called the grant a "tremendous boost" to the group, which has been looking out for Whistler fish for years. Blackcomb Helicopters has established a new base at the Squamish Airport. The expansion came as a result of an increase in bookings. Blackcomb Helicopters has three helicopters which service the forestry, film and construction industries, as well as working with Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. Blackcomb Helicopters also gives support for fire-fighting and search and rescue operations. Pilot Laurence Perry, with more than 9,000 hours of flying experience, will manage the new base. Lawyer Melanie Murray of Race and Company in Squamish will examine the kinds of environmental issues that affect our lives and the current legislation related to these issues at a free legal seminar July 29. The Environment and the Law legal seminar will be held at the Whistler Public Library, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The seminar is free but pre-register is required by July 26. Call 932-5564 or drop by the library. A minimum of 10 people are required in order to offer the workshop
