Each home in Whistler will be receiving a gift from the bears this month. Fridge magnets from the Jennifer Jones Bear Foundation are being distributed to promote proper garbage disposal. Problem bears are generally those which are used to eating garbage. The magnets are part of the Bear Foundation's summer education program to inform Whistler residents of the problems local bears face. The sixth annual Mayor's Picnic will be held Sunday at Rainbow Park, from 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Organized by the municipal parks and recreation department, the Mayor's Picnic will include a barbecue, three-legged races, contests, bike decorating and jugglers. Blackcomb Catering is providing low-priced traditional barbecue fare and Araxi’s restaurant is donating dessert. Skydiver Jim Hodge will make an appearance, weather permitting, at 1:30 p.m. Look up. Whistler Sailing will provide free use of canoes and boats. The free picnic usually attracts several hundred parents and children and will run rain or shine. Meadow Park will be the site of free bike inspections on Aug. 27 and 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ten E-Team students, who are training to become certified bicycle mechanics, will check brakes, shifters, seat height, tire pressure and ensure the bikes are road safe. Repairs will be referred to a bike shop. The E-Team work crew is part of the Ministry of Environment Bikeways Project. The project aims to provide unemployed youth between 16 and 24 with work-skill training in bike mechanics, first aid and public relations and to promote cycling as a sport and alternative form of transportation.
