Question ratifies contract Staff at the Whistler Question weekly unanimously voted, Monday evening, Dec. 1, to ratify their first collective agreement — as local 213 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers — with Question management. The agreement gives staff a 3 per cent increase in wages now, and a 4 per cent raise on October, 1998. The newspaper's management also have to ratify the agreement and were to do so the same night. The Question is the first newspaper in the Alberta-based WestMount Press Ltd. chain to be unionized and to arrive at a ratified first contract. Tourism topped $8.3 billion Revised numbers show that tourism in B.C. generated a record $8.3 billion in 1996, information from Tourism British Columbia says. The Whistler slice of that money pie won't be known until January or February, 1998, says a spokesman for Tourism B.C., but the Vancouver-Whistler region accounted for 39 per cent of the total. The announcement seems keen to put an APEC spin on the amount. Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation countries are said to have contributed $2.7 billion of the $3.4 billion spent by international visitors to B.C. last year. But that figure includes Americans — the U.S. is an APEC nation, too — who might be considered to be visitors from "next door" rather than from Asia, or the Pacific Rim in general. Condomsense wants you The annual Condomsense campaign wants volunteers to rubber-ize Whistler. The Whistler AIDS Prevention Program organizes the campaign, Dec. 12-18, and needs volunteers to distribute information and condoms about sexually-transmitted disease and how to avoid them at staff housing units and town bars. Volunteers must be comfortable speaking with others about proper use of condoms, sexually transmitted diseases and HIV. Training for volunteers takes place at the Whistler Health Care Centre, Tuesday, Dec. 9, from 8 to 9:30 p.m. If interested, call Sue Clarkson at SAFE: 932-3202.
