Sibling city signing ceremony Mayor Masayoshi Sato and eight other delegates from Karuizawa, Japan will be coming to Whistler early next week for the official sister city signing ceremony, on March 3. Karuizawa hosted the curling events of the 1998 Nagano Olympic Winter Games, but is best known in Japan as a summer resort. It is approximately two hours by car, or one hour by bullet train, from Tokyo. At the signing Whistler and Karuizawa will be declared sister cities, a first time relationship for Whistler. The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Roundhouse Lodge on Whistler Mountain. The ceremonies will involve an exchange of municipal flags. Mayor Hugh O’Reilly will present Mayor Sato with a gift from the citizens of Whistler to the town of Karuizawa. While in Whistler the delegation will also be welcomed at a reception hosted by the Whistler Resort Association, tour the resort and attend a dinner at Joel’s restaurant at Nicklaus North. The objectives of twinning with Karuizawa are to strengthen cultural, tourism and economic ties with Japan. Student homestays, sports meets, professional and community exchanges are some of the activities both municipalities hope to promote. Joe Foy of the Western Canada Wilderness Committee will be the guest speaker at the next AWARE meeting, March 4, at 7 p.m. in the Delta Whistler Resort. Foy will present the committee’s vision for protection of the Stoltmann wilderness. The committee is proposing the creation of a 500,000 hectare national park. This proposal will need the support of neighbouring communities such as Whistler if it is to succeed. This meeting is intended to stimulate discussion among Whistlerites. For more information contact AWARE at 932-4457. Artrageous is calling Organizers of the next Artrageous, which will be part of the April 10 Town Party, are calling for submissions from local artists. This rookie team won the 1998 B.C. South West Regional Competition held in Whistler last year. The team went on to Yellowknife’s Western Canadian Competition, placing a strong third overall. The fund-raising event will begin at 7 p.m. at Willy G’s Restaurant in Pemberton and includes a three course meal. Tickets are available from the restaurant or by calling 894-6411.
