Franz Wilhelmsen, the first president of Garibaldi Lifts Ltd. and the driving force behind the development of Whistler Mountain, is working on an autobiography. The book is due to be published later this year and will include many of Wilhelmsen’s observations and recollections of the early days in Whistler. Wilhelmsen is being honoured at the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame Museum this month. At a dinner on April 28 he will be presented with the 1998 W.A.C. Bennett Award for his contribution to the B.C. economy as it relates to skiing. Take a free ride B.C. Hydro is covering the bill on Earth Day, April 22, when rides on Whistler Transit buses will be free. Transit will be free on Earth Day and also on Clean Air Day, June 4. The Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment will be holding another "informal" meeting, April 16 at 7 p.m. in the Crystal Lounge. The concept for the meetings is to provide an opportunity for members of the community to discuss environmental issues of all kinds in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. AWARE’s first informal meeting was last month. This month’s meeting will be attended by Norma Wilson of the Outdoor Recreation Council of B.C. Wilson is providing input into the Local Resource Management Plan for the Lillooet Forest District, which includes the Duffey Lake, Anderson Lake, McGilivray Pass, Goldbridge, Hurley Pass and Spruce Lake areas. The Pemberton Christian Fellowship is sponsoring an Easter Sunrise Service Sunday, April 12 at 6:30 a.m. at the Pemberton Airport picnic grounds. Everyone is welcome to join the celebration; hot drinks and food to follow. LA trade mission proposed The B.C. chapter of Women Entrepreneurs of Canada is considering a business women’s trade mission to Los Angeles in October. The purpose of the trade mission will be to develop strategic alliances, foster business relationships, develop export partnerships and to offer a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences. More than 100 women are expected to participate. WEC has held discussions at various levels of government and industry to promote the trade mission, including a March 19 meeting with former prime minister and current Consul General for Canada in Los Angeles, Kim Campbell.
