Cafe closing for cleaning The Whistler Secondary Internet Cafe will be closing for its annual housekeeping on Saturday, Aug. 15. The Cafe will re-open on Friday, Sept. 11 but all hot mail sites must be cleared by Aug. 15. Don't mention the war Whistler is getting ready for its close-up. A German production crew is coming to town in late August to film a major television special. ZDF, Germany's National Television Network will set up shop here from Aug. 26 to 30. In conjunction with the WRA the production company is soliciting applications for production assistants and cable pullers. Applications are available form the activity centre and chamber of commerce. Volunteers needed for Summit Series Kirsten Nobbs from Whistler Blackcomb Employee Experience is putting out the call for volunteer help for this year's Summit Series. This Saturday sees the swinging blues of Colin James and The Little Big Band join Jann Arden on stage. Sunday features kid's entertainer Fred Penner. The apex concert of the series takes place on Saturday, Aug. 15 with The Philosopher Kings, Chantal Kreviazuk, Blue Rodeo and the Cowboy Junkies. Help is needed for all three events. "The compensation package includes free entry into the concerts and a T-shirt — it's a pretty funky T-shirt, too," says Nobbs. "We're looking for anyone who wants to get involved. We have spaces in Food and Beverage, Guest Relations, Parking and Clean-up." All you need to do to join in is call Employee Experience on 938-7366 and sign up. The road to romance Set the champagne corks popping, what some may regard as our very own white knuckle ride has been presented with a whole new rosy accolade. The Sea to Sky Highway has been named one of the "Most Romantic Roads" in the world by the 1998 issue of the Robb Report. The magazine has just published its 10th annual "Best of the Best," guide directing readers to the good life in many forms. There are 50 different categories covering people, places and even companies. This year's Robb Report describes the Sea to Sky Highway as a road which leads to "scenes that linger in memory," and "winds and climbs to where there is some of the world's finest skiing." We still wouldn't recommend holding hands while you drive. Vancouver tops London and Paris The North American Travel Journalists Association (NATJA) just announced Vancouver as their 1998 Best International Destination. Over 200 writers, broadcasters and photographers took part in the poll which ranked Vancouver number one. "This distinction for Vancouver is well deserved yet somewhat of a surprise given the city was named over places like London or Paris with the travel journalists' vote for best," notes NATJA president Dan Schlossberg. "Its mix of water and mountain scenery, hospitality, hotels and attractions like Victoria, Whistler, Seattle and Portland all influence its appeal."
