Whistler’s Dan Greene was elected president of B.C. Library Trustee Association at the association’s conference in Whistler last week. Greene, who served on the board as vice president for human resources last year, heads a committee of nine library trustees representing library boards across the province. The association lobbies on behalf of B.C.’s public libraries, assists with local issues, conducts workshops, training and trustee education. Greene has also been a trustee of the Whistler Public Library for the past five years, serving three years as chairman. Also re-elected to the board of the BCLTA was Margaret Long of Pemberton, who will continue to be in charge of meetings and conferences. The Whistler Chamber of Commerce will not be holding its annual dinner/dance this year. The board of directors feels that members’ social calendars are too full to continue the event on an annual basis. The Citizen of the Year Award will be presented at the Chamber’s July luncheon meeting. Nomination forms are now available. The Business Person of the Year Award will be presented at the Whistler Spirit Employer’s Luncheon in November. The Coast Garibaldi Health Region warns that childhood immunization rates in the region are declining. For the first time in more than 10 years the region failed last year to meet the standard of 95 per cent coverage. Of more than 900 Grade 1 students, 91 per cent were immunized for diptheria, pertussis and tetanus, and 93 per cent for polio, measles, mumps and rubella. Only 88 per cent of Grade 6 students received their series for hepatitis B. When vaccination rates fall significantly serious outbreaks of disease can happen. The Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Whistler and Pemberton are recruiting new Bigs to help in the development of children growing up in single-parent families.
