There won’t be any sunset dining or star gazing on Blackcomb this summer, as the cost of keeping the lifts running and staffing the Rendezvous far outweighed the financial returns. John Nemy, who has run the Pacific Observatory on top of Blackcomb on Saturday nights the past few summers, had no alternative plans for the observatory at press time. Poor weather on several Saturdays last summer hurt attendance. While there will be no public evening operations on Blackcomb, the mountain has a number of returning activities during the day. Site seeing, hiking, horseback riding, summer skiing and guided mountain bike descents will be offered through Guest Relations. Public skiing will also take place in the afternoons on Horstman Glacier, after the ski camps are done for the day. Canadian Snowmobile Adventures will also be offering all terrain vehicle tours from the base of the mountain this summer. Advance registration for the Whistler Children’s Art Festival (June 8-9) will be held one day only: Thursday, May 31 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Myrtle Philip Community School. Only those children currently in school may be registered. Workshop schedule information will be sent home from school and will be available at the Whistler Public Library. Tickets for pre-school workshops will be sold Saturday, June 8, from 8 a.m. For more information call 938-0498. Sea to Sky Canines and the Federation of Independent Dog Owners (FIDO) will be offering the corridor’s first Canine Good Citizen Test June 1. The purpose of the test is to educate owners and others about the benefits of a well-trained pet. If dog handlers and their dogs pass the test they will receive a CGC certificate, bandanna and identification card from FIDO. For registration and information call Jan at 892-6382. The location for the test is still to be announced.
