Nicoll continues to shine

Whistler snowboarder earns third World Cup medal in three weeks

Whistler’s Mercedes Nicoll is on a roll, adding a silver halfpipe medal to her growing collection with another strong performance at the World Cup at Lake Placid, New York, last weekend. The week before, Nicoll, 21, won back-to-back bronze medals in Korea.

Nicoll finished a point shy of her first World Cup victory behind Soro Yamoaoka of Japan. Mero Narita, another Japanese rider, was third.

Nicoll is now ranked fourth in the World Cup standings, as the season winds down with a series of North American events.

Dominique Vallée of Squamish was 10 th , while Whistler’s Maëlle Ricker and Anne-Marie Gauthier of Trois-Rivieres-Ouest, Quebec, were 14 th and 17 th respectively.

In the men’s event, Shaun White won the gold medal hands down, followed by Mason Aguiree of Minnesota. Whistler’s Justin Lamoureux came close to the podium, but had to settle for fourth behind Jan Michaelis of Germany.

Only Hugo Lemay of Beauport Quebec joined Lamoureux in the finals, where he finished in eighth.

In the snowboardcross the next day, Vancouver’s Erin Simmons finished second to Lindsay Jacobellis of the U.S., her best result this season.

"I didn’t do well in my last few runs so I told myself the only person who could give me trouble was me," said Simmons. "In fact there’s one of my opponents who was better than (me) today but his second place finish is very satisfying."

The next World Cup event is this weekend at Sierra Nevada, Spain.
