After looking around the world, Roger Soane has moved across town.

The former general manager of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler and current Tourism Whistler chairman of the board has been named general manager at Nita Lake Lodge.

He said he took time off work to be a tourist in his own town with his family. When he started looking for a new job his preference was to keep his three children in Whistler, but he was open to making a move.

In his search for his next assignment, Soane said he looked at opportunities both inside and outside of Canada but none of the possibilities met the criteria he and his family were looking for.

According to Soane, he was approached by Nita Lake and he started his new job on Feb. 1, eight months after his last day at the Fairmont on May 31, 2011

"It is a very different challenge for me going from a big ship like the Fairmont with 550 rooms coming to a smaller property with 77 — it is much more hands on," Soane said of the move to a smaller hotel.

"Nita Lake Lodge is a true gem in Whistler and perfectly positioned to become the number one boutique hotel in Canada with a reputation for tailored experiences and leading hospitality.

"The hotel currently holds the number one position in Whistler on consumer travel web site Trip Advisor, which is a credit to the talented hotel team and a wonderful foundation to build on."

He added that one of his goals is to increase the number of Whistler residents using the property.

The Nita Lake Lodge was built in 2008 and in March of 2010 it was taken over by Tumuluri Asset Management Inc.
