It’s not a question of talent, more an adventure of bravery at the Sea to Sky Youth variety show called Friday Night Live on Friday, June 1 at 7 p.m. at MY Millennium Place.
“It’s a way for them to showcase their talents and non-talents,” said organizer Caroline Stroud. “You don’t have to be talented to come out and get involved. It is all about having fun.”
Talent is a broad, encompassing word. Some might argue tongue twisters — “How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?” — or maybe Bach’s Symphony In D Major on the spoons doesn’t merit “talent”, but it would definitely fall under the fun category.
“Kids aren’t always used to putting themselves on the line,” Stroud said. “They will be really challenging themselves. Challenging themselves in a different form or expression. They may have done it in arts or sports in a more formal environment, but this is going to be very open and free.”
The Youth Workers will get the ball rolling with a skit to kick off the night hosted by youth MCs. Everything from guitar solos and independent films to magic tricks and “strange things” will follow.
“Anyone who comes is going to get a pretty good kick out of it,” Stroud said. “It will definitely be entertaining and fun.”
More than 30 to 40 kids will take the stage.
There will be prize giveaways throughout the night thanks to community support. Forty-five sponsors came forward to cheer on the third annual event with extra help from Rocky Mountain Productions and MY Millennium Place. Heather Paul and Angie Nolan from Short Skirt Theatre, also volunteered their staging expertise as well.
“This wouldn’t be possible without the support of the community,” Stroud said. “We’ve got high school grads coming out. It’s a great opportunity for them to have some fun. It’s an opportunity they might not get down the road.”
Friday Night Live is only one event hosted by the Whistler Youth Centre, located downstairs in MY Millennium Place. Scavenger hunts, dances and movie nights are other events youth can get involved with.
Tickets for Friday Night Live are $3 for youth and $8 for adults.
