Nothing halfway for local runners

Athletes race in Victoria, North Shore

October is marathon month in B.C., and Whistler runners could be found at both the Royal Victoria Marathon and Half Marathon on Sunday, and the North Shore Half Marathon on Monday. The Okanagan International Marathon in Kelowna also took place, but local runners opted to keep to the coast this year.

In Victoria, Whistler’s Kevin Titus placed fifth overall in the full 42.2 km marathon and first in the men’s 50 to 54 age group with a time of 2:37:59 — a little shy of his personal best for that race, but almost 17 minutes faster than the next runner in his category.

Shizuo Kashino was 175 th overall out of 2,000 runners, as well as 33 rd in the men’s 40 to 44 group with a tie of 3:20:43.

Dusan Kafka was 325 th and 69 th out of 202 runners in the men’s 35 to 39 category in 3:31:11.

Claire Daniels placed eighth in the women’s 20 to 24 category in 3:34:16, as well as 78 th out of close to 850 female runners.

Robert Tan was 87 th out of 198 runners in the men’s 45 to 49 race in 3:49:05.

Diana Taxter was 41 st out of 155 in the women’s 40 to 44 race in 3:52:10.

From Pemberton, Gwendolyn Kennedy placed 62 nd out of 157 women in the 40 to 44 age group in 4:10:43.

In the 21.1 km half marathon, Scott Taber placed 104 th overall out of more than 3,700 runners in 1:29:48. He placed 14 th out of 216 runners in the men’s 40 to 44 age category.

Megan Wastle was 82 nd out of 2,375 women, and 15 th out of 310 runners in the women’s 30 to 34 age group in 1:40:16.

Lisa Kallio was 93 rd among women and 19 th out of 365 in the women’s 35 to 39 race in 1:41:05.

Heather Abernethy was 128 th among women and 24 th in the women’s 35 to 39 race in 1:43:07.

Chris Gamel was 47 th out of 219 men in the 50 to 54 category in 1:45:20.

Corinne Cowden was 44 th out of 381 runners in the women’s 40 to 44 race in 1:48:28.

Georgina Titus was 49 th out of 381 women in the 40 to 44 age category in 1:49:40.

Alli Van Gruen was 64 th in the 40 to 44 race in 1:53:32.

Heather Clifford was 62 nd in the women’s 45 to 49 category in 1:52:06.

Karin Kafkova was 104 th in women’s 30 to 34 in 1:59:01.

Jacqui Tyler was 19 th out of 150 runners in the women’s 55 to 59 category in 2:06:32.

Taralyn Day was 199 th out of 300 women in the 25 to 29 race n 2:10:56.

Barbara Boulanger was 216 th in women’s 40 to 44 in 2:12:27.

Debra Nelson was 121 st in women’s 50 to 54 in 2:13:24.

Caroline Bagnall was 242 nd in women’s 40 to 44 in 2:15:59.

Kim Thompson was 33 rd in women’s 35 to 39 in 2:48:27.

Vicki Thompson was one spot back overall, placing 286 th in the women’s 25 to 29 category in 2:48:28.

From Pemberton, Shayne May was the top runner, placing 445 th overall and 49 th out of 136 in men’s 25 to 29. One spot back, and 23 rd out of 300 racers in 25 to 29 was Lindsay May in 1:42:35.

Mark Leverton was 81 st in men’s 50 to 54 in 1:51:46.

Tricia Field was 260 th in women’s 45 to 49 in 2:29:33.

Laura Burt was 283rd in women’s 25 to 28 in 2:46:37.

Katie Paulet was 290 th in women’s 30 to 34 in 2:52:55.

A handful of local runners were among the more than 1,700 athletes to race the 8 km sprint course.

Whistler’s Morgan Titus placed third overall in 25:03, behind Olympic triathlon champion Simon Whitfield, and Eric Kiauka.

Jake Taber raced in the men’s Under 12 race, where he placed 11 th out of 45 starters in 39:07. He was also 229 th overall.

Stephanie Forsyth was 23 rd in women’s 30 to 34 in 44:11.

From Pemberton, Kirck Becker was 12 th in men’s 30 to 34 in 35:13.

Amy Hazeldine was 92 nd in women’s 30 to 34 in 55:12.

Joe Davies, the youngest racer at age 6, was 39 th in the Under 12 category in 1:04:23.

In the North Shore Half Marathon, Karen Farr placed sixth out of 23 runners in the women’s 40 to 44 race in 1:43:25.
