KVRS series kicks off with giant slalom

The Kokanee Valley Race Series kicked off last Thursday (Dec. 18) with a giant slalom on Ross's Gold.

The calibre of competition was kicked up a notch with the participation of Whistler Mountain Ski Club coaches Sead Causevic and Rob Boyd, and former World Cup star Chris Kent.

In the men's pro division, Causevic won the first run with a time of 42.59 seconds and Boyd was second in 43.30. Boyd, who is more of a downhiller than a technical skier, turned it up for the second race and posted a time of 45.45, 0.22 seconds faster than Causevic. It wasn't fast enough to pull ahead, however, and Causevic took the win by almost half a second over two runs.

"It was a pretty exciting race," said Boyd. "Sead beat me in the first run, then I got him in the second run, but it wasn't enough."

Although the attendance was down - a symptom of powder days - some of the categories were extremely competitive.

The draw prize of a pair of Atomic skis went to Stuart Neilson.

The next race in the series takes place on Jan. 15, and is another giant slalom. Day of registration and bib pickup will be at the Rendezvous Lodge. You can pre-register in advance at any ski school sales or Guest Relations location prior to the race.
