OCP workshop to be held in North Vancouver

Whistler workshop scheduled for Nov. 24

Out-of-town homeowners will soon have a chance to catch up on Whistler's Official Community Plan (OCP) process.

Resort Municipality of Whistler staff are holding an OCP workshop on Nov. 10 at the Pinnacle Hotel in North Vancouver. Less a workshop than an open house, this meeting is meant for Whistler homeowners whose primary residences are in the Lower Mainland. They can meet with RMOW staff and ask questions about the OCP process to date.

"In keeping with our philosophy with this OCP update, our commitment to collaborate with the community, we need to find the members of our community that aren't here this month and go to them," said RMOW sustainability coordinator Kevin Damaskie.

He said this is the first step of a "continuum process" and whoever wants more involvement in the OCP update should participate in the second workshop, scheduled for Nov. 24 at the Whistler Conference Centre.

"If you want to get more involved in the process of directing the OCP update from a citizen's standpoint, from your input becoming part of the direction, you need to participate on (Nov. 24)," he said.

The second workshop is open to all. Staff has taken the input received from the public through various events, including the successful Backyard Brainstorm sessions this past summer, and will present them to the community as a consolidated list that will be used in the next step of updating the OCP.

Following this workshop, the RMOW will hold specific working group meetings leading up to Christmas, where community members will work on specific policy directions as they relate to issues including transportation and land use.

"People will be taking the general directions provided by that input and turning that into specific policy recommendations, which would go into a draft OCP," Damaskie said.

Everyone who participates in the Nov. 24 workshop is eligible to win one of five vouchers for Whistler Blackcomb Edge Cards, which come with one free day pass.

By April or May of next year, RMOW staff is hoping to be in the final phase of the update with a draft of the OCP that will then be shared with the public.

"We're about halfway because we need to get beyond issues and opportunities and get right down to the dirt of specific policies in draft format post-November 24," Damaskie said.
