David Emerson, the federal Minister of International Trade, Minister for the Pacific Gateway and the Vancouver-Whistler Olympics, will be in Whistler on Wednesday, Nov. 7 to discuss the municipality’s Live Sites program for the 2010 Games.

The Live Sites project includes all of the village animation, performances, and visual spectacle that will take place during the Games, with an estimated budget of $18.5 million. Whistler council recently approved an application to Canadian Heritage requesting $10 million for Live Site attractions, $5 million of which would go towards the Live Sites programming budget.

The Vancouver Organizing Committee of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games (VANOC) and the municipality will provide the remainder of the Live Sites Funding. The municipality’s contribution will come from the additional hotel tax that the municipality now receives. The partners hosting the Live Sites through the Games are also looking for corporate sponsorship.

This money is separate from the $14.2 million committed to building a medals plaza on Lot 1/9.

Emerson will be presenting his remarks at Maurice Young Millennium Place from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 7. To attend, RSVP Donna Wango at dwango@whistler.ca .
