Olympic security drill scheduled for Squamish

Most exercise is pretty boring. Who actually like jogging? Usually just crazy people. Or people with MP3 players.

In defiance of boredom comes Exercise Silver, an Olympic securities mocu-calamity between with various local security agencies, like the Squamish Emergency Program, Search and Rescue, Emergency Social Services, and Municipal Emergency Radio Program. Each of those agencies had dreamt up various emergency scenarios, and, with the help of a transplant working at the Integrated Security Unit in Richmond, they'll test their mettle from Feb. 9 to 13.

"By participating in these exercises, it will help us advance our response and recovery activities from local events, emergencies or disasters that may effect our community," said Jim Lang, Squamish Emergency Coordinator. "These exercises help move Squamish forward to becoming a disaster resilient community."

Exercise Silver builds on last year's Exercise Bronze, which saw security agencies testing their communications infrastructure. Still coming is Exercise Gold, scheduled for 2009, which is billed as the final check for security in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
