Mayor Hugh O’Reilly and other key industry players will be unrolling details of B.C.’s Hydrogen Highway at the Globe 2004 conference.
The conference began in Vancouver on March 31, bringing together businesses executives and government officials from 75 countries.
O’Reilly is one of several key speakers talking about B.C.’s hydrogen and fuel cell strategy. Also speaking will be Ron Britton, president and CEO of Fuel Cells Canada and Firoz Rasul, chairman of Ballard Power Systems Inc.
B.C.’s Hydrogen Highway project as planned will see alternative fuel station nodes at Vancouver International Airport, the University of British Columbia, Whistler, and other locations. By the 2010 Winter Games, it is hoped that B.C.’s Hydrogen Highway could extend all the way to California.
There, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently promised to build alternative fuel stations every 30 kilometres along the state’s major highways by 2010.
There are also plans to build another hydrogen highway along the 900 km stretch between Windsor and Montreal.
Last August the federal government gave $130 million to fuel cell development as part of its commitment to lower its emissions as promised in the Kyoto Protocol.
