Two-race event open to the public
The woods of Lost Lake park will provide the terrain for the 2003 Greater Vancouver Orienteering Club Championships and Whistler Invitational next Saturday, Oct. 4.
Open to the public as well as GVOC members, the championships will feature a short Prologue seeding race in the morning, and the main Chase event in the afternoon. A competitor’s total time over the two events will determine overall ranking.
The championships will be based out of the Lost Lake Warming Hut at Lost Lake park.
Sign-on runs from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., and competitors can start the Prologue any time between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. – any time they are ready.
The Prologue courses are approximately two kilometres long, and should take anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes to complete.
There will be four different Prologue courses, each approximately two kilometres long. There is a beginner course, an intermediate course, an advanced short course (technically difficult), and an advanced long course (technically difficult and physically demanding).
Your time in the Prologue will determine where you start in the Chase competition, which gets underway somewhere between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. – 1 p.m. plus your time in the Prologue. At 2 p.m. there will be a mass start of everyone else.
The Chase distances are two kilometres for beginners and intermediates, three kilometres for the advanced short course, and five kilometres for the advanced long course.

Limited entry on the day of the event will be available, depending on the availability of maps.
The entry fee for the day includes both races and the rental of an electronic device that ensures you visit all the control points in order. The cost is $22 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $11 for kids 16 and younger.
There will be awards for all of the competitive categories, as well as awards for rookie orienteers from the Whistler area.
