Oscars go to the dogs

Animal shelter hosts Oscar Party with the red carpet treatment

Come walk the red carpet for a great cause with the WAG (Whistler Animals Galore) Oscar Party Fundraiser Sunday, March 5 at Moe Joe’s Nightclub.

"We hope to make it an annual event," said shelter director Carol Coffey. "People should have fun dressing up. It’s intended to be a black-tie event, but wear your best hoodie if you are desperate."

Mix up the hemp necklace staple with a string of rhinestones or slick back your hair for James Bond sophistication and don your best evening gown or tux for the animal shelter fundraiser with prizes for Best and Worst Dressed, Best Hair and Best Celebrity Look-alike.

"Joan Rivers", a.k.a. Michelle Bush of Porta Parties, will be on hand with her "daughter" Melissa to gossip about the disasters and triumphs strolling in on the red carpet, as well as paparazzi snapping photos for Best and Worst Dressed.

The hilarious Chris Quinlan of Behind the Grind will be the Master of Ceremonies for the evening.

Vote for your Oscar winning predictions and watch it play out on the big screen to win some great prizes.

Lush cosmetics beauticians will be on hand to make you feel like a star with all donations benefiting WAG.

WAG officials are hard at work, lobbying funds for the shelter, which housed 120 unwanted, abused and/or injured animals last year. A presentation was made to Pemberton Council last month, asking for $3,000 to subsidize the costs of the animals WAG takes in from the Pemberton area. Last year, 25.8 per cent of the shelter animals came from Whistler, 22.5 from Pemberton, 40.8 from Mount Currie, 6.7 from D’Arcy, 2.2 from Birken and the remainder from Squamish and Lillooet. In an effort to reduce the number of animals coming from Mount Currie, a spay and neuter program was implemented in the area. Thanks to veterinary and community volunteers 78 dogs were spay and neutered. Funding is needed to continue the program. Clinic dates are already set for the spring and fall.

In partnership with Coast Mountain Vet Services, WAG is also organizing a financial assistance neuter and spay (FANS) program for low-income families.

"We are looking for other solutions to reduce the number of homeless animals in the area," Coffey said.

Join in the evening of glamour and fun and raise funds for a star organization.

Advanced tickets are $25 or $30 at the door and include two specialty martinis. Doors 7 p.m.
