PacificSport Performance Centre celebrates grand opening

Although it has been in use for more than a month now, the new PacificSport Performance Centre in the Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC) will be hosting a public open house Saturday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m.

Although it has been in use for more than a month now, the new PacificSport Performance Centre in the Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC) will be hosting a public open house Saturday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon, to show off the facility and its state-of-the-art training equipment.

The Canadian Sport Centre Pacific, WMSC, and Pacificsport Sea to Sky are partners in the project, which was created with $175,000 in funding from the Canadian Sports Centre, Own the Podium, 2010 Legacies Now, and the province. PacificSport is a division of Sport B.C., which is the provincial agency of Sport Canada.

The new gym features equipment from Life Fitness and Hammer Strength, which PacificSport athletes and WMSC racers can use with trainers and coaches, or on their own. To date the gym has been used by members of the national and provincial snowboard and freestyle teams, the national and provincial para-alpine team, and high performance skiers of all levels who are fitting in their pre-season dryland training and fitness testing.

“It’s already been quite busy and we’re expecting to get even busier after the open house when the word gets out there,” said regional PacificSport coordinator Tami Mitchell. “Right now we have the B.C. Men’s Alpine team working with (strength and conditioning coach) Cindy Thomson.

“Soon teams will finish their yearly training plans, so we’ll know when the athletes are having camps and competitions in the area, and they can call us to book training time.”

Local athletes will be present at the open house, and there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. To RSVP, contact 604-905-6797.
