Opening ceremonies today

The Paralympics may have opened today in Torino, Italy but Whistler will be celebrating the Games wholeheartedly over the next 10 days.

The Vancouver 2010 Information Centre in Whistler, located on Village Stroll, will be showing daily Internet coverage of the Paralympics, including today’s opening ceremonies and events from March 11 to 19.

The information centre will also be featuring sport profiles, where people can learn about Paralympic winter sports and the athletes representing Canada in Torino. There will also be daily demonstrations between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., including wheelchair curling.

On Sunday, March 12 at 3 p.m., VANOC representatives and the information centre will be hosting a Four Years to Go celebration, marking four years to the start of the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Whistler. There will, of course, be cake.

And on Saturday, March 18 at 7 p.m. the Academy Award-nominated film Murderball will be screened at MY Millennium Place. Nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 78 th Academy Awards, Murderball gives an inside look at the world of wheelchair rugby as the U.S. and Canadian teams prepared for the 2004 Athens Paralympics. Entrance is by donation to the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program.

The Paralympic Winter Games include alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, biathlon, sledge hockey and wheelchair curling.
