parent prevent

Parents as preventors Parents can fine tune their awareness of drug and alcohol issues for youth at a two-hour workshop, May 21, at Whistler Secondary School. The workshop, which starts at 7 p.m., aims to help parents understand the scope and nature of alcohol and other drug use by young people; provide a forum for parents to share experiences with the stress and conflict associated with the habits of their sons and daughters; and to challenge parents to take an active — and educated — role in the prevention process. "Parents more strongly opposed to drug use were less likely to have a child use drugs," says the workshop announcement, quoting a 1995 survey. "Conversely, parents that do not care about drug use appear to have a higher proportion of drug users among their children." The workshop will be conducted by David Thompson. Co-sponsors are the district and Whistler Secondary parent advisory councils, in conjunction with alcohol and drug education services. There is no cost and babysitting is available. Pre-register by calling 905-2581.
