Parts of Pemberton’s ‘Olympic’ festival postponed

A lack of snow has forced organizers to postpone some of the events planned for Pemberton’s "Olympic" winter festival until next year.

The festival was scheduled to have a range of snow related activities and slated to coincide with the Olympics in 2010, but the weather has not co-operated.

"Fortunately we set up all of the snow events for Sunday," said the event’s producer Jan Kennett. "This will allow us to carry on with all of the Friday and Saturday events."

Kennett added that it had been a difficult but unavoidable decision to cancel some of the events because of the work that had already gone into it.

"It is unfortunate that we do not have the snow to hold the Sunday events this year, but we will next year and it will be a bigger and better," she said.

"I would like to thank all of the volunteers that worked on the Sunday events. I know it is a disappointment to them, but even with offers to hold the events in alternate locations or to truck snow to the existing locations, it would not allow us to hold a safe and quality event."

All the other events will proceed as planned, including the Much Music dance for teens at the Community Centre on Friday night. The parade will also begin as planned on Saturday at 11a.m., which will involve a variety of activities for children.

Other events include the "Spirit of B.C." flag raising ceremony at the Royal Canadian Legion, family day activities at the museum and First Nations exhibitions.

For the adults, the Snowdown is still on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Big Sky Golf and Country Club.

All funds raised at the festival will go to support promising athletes in the area striving for 2010 through the Chance For Kids organization.
