Re: “Statistics — the devil is in the details

Hi Max: recently- a month/two ago ? I heard Quinn's on the coast on cbc.. so I sent this to CBC and the BC Coroner's office... and i sent something similar the last time the BC Coroner's 'debated' helmets... Probably when the Ski Canada article on Shealy's research came out...

Manditory Helmets
ps: thank you in advance for your time. I heard Stephen Quinn's On the Coast and had to send this to him...

Stephen:
I was so dismayed by the as-if discussion on manditory ski helmets that I have to whip this one off or suffer some disease from not speaking.
My Background: Over fourty years of about 60 to many 120+ day seasons.
I have seen many things and I have a full time participant's injury list to show for it.
I am way more scared of others driving their cars...
I have seen my sport mimic the social changes in North American society: It used to be a sport and now it is entertainment... don't get me started...
Where once; most participants knew a bit about which way was up, to; in the modern age; where most can't even speak their own *....n language.

Most of what You said focused on impending doom, liability and litigation. You must have kids. Helmets won't make up for stupidity.
I am happy David Lynn quoted Dr. Shealy.
Science is on my side with the number of skier days in the millions and Any head injury in the dozens...

Here are a few of My posts from: http://www.epicski.com/f/
( search this for many long... way too long, threads on frkn helmets and many, many posts by people who see the world as a threat. )

"" Another 5 page Helmet thread... just what reeeal skiers need.
I HAVE ALWAYS SAID WEAR A HELMET ON YER KNEE. Yer knee will get it first. Stats are on my side... per million skier days.
People demand helmets so they can say 'At least he was wearing a helmet '... so They don't have to feel guilty.
Just like they say for the avalanche dead " at least he was doing something he loved" - even tho' anyone who knew a little more wouldn't have been out there. ( Max I remember a column you did a wat long time ago. )
Not to mention the 25mph durability limit for 90 percent of the helmets sold. Wear a big ass motorcycle helmet if you really want some ' protection'.
I say plan a-head and if you want big air -pull my finger. ( note: every time I click in; 40 mph is a given entry level speed on a groomed piste )""

"" Eccimortal called everyone without a helmet a moron. Well; see what kind of winter you have when you call everyone not wearing a helmet in the lift line a moron.
You better wear a helmet.
Did you do a ski-carrying-helicopter in the lift line ? And on the way to that lift line did you walk in plastic boots on ice to the lift-base ? How much bacon did you have for breakfast at the base lodge 20 minutes before you rode the lift ? Do you have half-gone all seasons on the SUV - like most people on the Sea-to-Sky ?
Did you look at the GPS en route ? Or talk on the cell while following two seconds behind on winter roads ?
If I was going to wear a helmet on a regular basis it would be because the turkey on the chair next to me yanked the safety-bar down as soon as he could - without warning. That's my anecdotal "evidence" .
Here is some science:
That's 7200 skier injuries per 4.8 million skier days. That is ALL injuries. HOW MANY CONCUSSIONS PER THAT ?
Do your kids play soccer and head the ball ? OR hockey. OR FOOTBALL. These sports have many times more concussions than the skier/ day stats.
But you probably won't have a head injury NOT because you didn't wear a helmet... but because you did not crash.
Or if you did, your head did not get rubbed, scraped or crushed... perhaps it got wet. Maybe your goggles got filled again.""

"" Ha Ha - WEAR A HELMET ON YOUR KNEE cause your knee will get it first, and read the Ski Canada article that quotes the REAL FACTS about helmets and their lack of serious harm reduction in head injury stats.
Basically - you should wear a motorcycle helmet if you are worried about a real head injury... and how much fun with that wad over your ears?
Make your kids wear them because they ski at slow speeds or you don't have to feel as guilty...

... the closing paragraph ...
"Helmets will probably never have a serious impact on mitigating death due to head injury since the typical fatal scenario has so much kinetic energy that it will overwhelm the protective elements of the helmet. But the good news is that fatal injuries in snowsports are quite rare—less than one in 1.5 million days of activity." ( probably a heart attack - mine guess)

This next page is from THE SHEALY STUDY: for eg Norwegian stats = 7,252 injuries and FOUR POINT EIGHT MILLION SKIER/BOARDER DAYS....

So there ya' go; Stephen.
Vote strategically. Turf Harper.
Take a lesson. Ski soon.
