Pay parking update to come this Friday

Officials from Parking Lot Operations Committee to offer briefing session in late afternoon

Changes to the pay parking regime in the Whistler Village Day Lots will be announced this Friday after weeks of speculation.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler announced in a news release late Tuesday that officials from Whistler Blackcomb and the RMOW on the Parking Lot Operations Committee will meet Friday to brief local media about changes to user-pay parking in the day lots.

Present at the meeting will be Doug Forseth, Whistler Blackcomb's senior vice-president of operations and Bob Dufour, vice-president of mountain operations and maintenance. Also present will be Bill Barratt, the Resort Municipality of Whistler's chief administrative officer and Jan Jansen, the municipality's general manager of resort experience.

Pay parking was implemented in Day Lots 1, 2 and 3 in June 2010 and has been "monitored and evaluated" since then, according to the news release.

User-pay parking has been a very unpopular initiative within Whistler, with numerous petitions being signed to reverse it and an outcry from business owners in the Village, many of whom have said that traffic to their outlets has been slower since it was implemented.
