Peak to Valley rescheduled due to weather

Sold out race to take place March 11-12

The organizers of the annual Appleton Rum Peak to Valley race have decided to wait until the valley part of the competition has more snow to run the event.

The race was originally slated for Feb. 4-5, but with warm weather and record rains, the decision was made last week to run the race on March 11-12.

"Part of the tradition of the Peak to Valley Race is the course that it is run on," said Cate Webster, the event project supervisor for Whistler-Blackcomb. "The current lower mountain conditions will not allow us to both run this race and accommodate our guests with a ski-out to Creekside. After much deliberation and consultation, the Whistler-Blackcomb Event Department has decided to postpone the race to ensure that the race tradition is maintained."

The race runs from the top of The Saddle and ends up in Creekside, with a vertical drop of almost 5,000 feet and 180 gates. Participants are in co-ed teams of four, with their combined age determining what category they’re racing in. Some groups are extremely competitive, composed of active racers, racing coaches and former World Cup members. Others dress up in costume, and enjoy the view as they make their top to bottom run.
