Mood Ruff doing their own stunts at Garf’s
moodruff

Who: Mood Ruff with Ink Operated feat. Caspian and DJ Wunderkut

Where: Garfinkel’s

When: Sunday, July 10

The brothers from different mothers of Mood Ruff will be throwing down at Garfinkel’s this Sunday night.

The Winnipeg-based hip-hop crew of Odario, Spitz, Icqri and newest member Breakz is hot on the release of latest studio album I Do My Own Stunts , which hit the streets this past May.

Ruff dates back to their high school days in the early 1990s, a time when the crewmembers would congregate in their parents’ basements to throw down on a karaoke machine.

Since then, the Ruff members have grown to be pillars of their local hip-hop community, founding the PegCity Holla urban music festival in 1997, the same year they launched their own label Slo Coach Recordings.

Ruff’s decade-plus history has given them a lot to work with, both lyrically and sonically.

History features strongly on the album’s first video release for the single ‘Rocketship,’ which intersperses current hang-out footage in a sunny apartment with nostalgic childhood footage, set to lyrics celebrating the best things in life and an infectious groovy bass line.

Overall, ‘Stunts’ has been lauded for its laidback rhyme delivery over a diverse collection of jazzy-samples and bass lines, a close cousin to the recent work of Toronto hip-hopper K-Os, with whom the Ruff crew has shared the stage.

Ruff will be joined at Garf’s by Surrey hip-hop crew Ink Operated, a group best known for producing the Canucks booster anthem ‘Playoff Push’ back in the good old hockey days, and West Coast scratchmaster DJ Wundercut.

Large Pro postponed, Guru show added

New York MC Large Pro’s visit to the Bassment–DJ Seanski’s weekly hip-hop night at Moe Joe’s–has been postponed until late September.

Large Pro was originally supposed to join Seanski and Co. this Tuesday, July 12.

But dry your eyes, hip-hop nation in Whistler; there are exciting things on the horizon. MC Guru of the legendary Gang Starr hip-hop crew is said to be stopping by the Bassment on Tuesday, July 19. Seanski and Guru go way back, having met in New York in the early 1990s working at the Public Library.

Seanski contributed as a DJ/Producer to Guru’s Jazzmatazz projects and toured with the respected MC in the mid-1990s. For more information on the show go to www.skimen.com.
