Pemberton's 2nd grocery nears June opening Accommodation above, food below By Chris Woodall Whistler's The Grocery Store will soon have a twin when the Pemberton Valley Grocery Store opens in June. Construction is nearing completion of the 9,500 square foot store at the north-east corner of Prospect and Birch streets which will include three other retail spots at street level and seven townhouses one storey up. "It'll be a full-service grocery store with a service deli for eat in at a small seating area, or take out," says Bob Adams, who with wife Sue is owner of The Grocery Store and co-owner of the Pemberton adventure. The deli will be open to sidewalk traffic, too. The Adams are joined by partners Bruce Van Mook, a Pemberton councillor, and Mark Blundell, who'll be moving to Pemberton to handle the grocery end. The store's bakery department will supply the Whistler grocery, too, although both will continue to carry items from current suppliers. The targeted opening date is June 1, but Adams says anything could come up to delay that date slightly. What will go into the commercial units hasn't been firmed up, Adams says, although there is serious interest in them. Two of those units will face Birch, the third will face Prospect. Thirty-six spaces for parking will be boosted with an agreement to use the Royal Canadian Legion parking area next door. "This is the first building constructed under Pemberton's new guidelines," Adams says. When complete, the block will have a blue/grey metal roof and dormers, with board and batten siding exposing natural wood tones. Once the preloaded foundation settled, the main part of the building was precast concrete with a steel girder outer frame. "I was really impressed with the work they did," Adams says of the B.C. Interior company that did the work. There will be some benches at the street corner, street lighting and trees when complete. The townhouses will be one- and two-bedroom units for rent or for sale in the $99,000-$159,000 range. The new grocery hopes to be open when customers want it: from 7:30 a.m. to catch the coffee and muffin crowd, and to 8 p.m. for the after-work mob. "We are really looking forward to being part of the community," Adams says.
