Implementation of 911 services for areas including Pemberton, Mount Currie, Britannia Beach and Furry Creek, initially slated for February 16, has been delayed to March.
The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) announced in a news release that it has had to postpone activation of the service into the next month in order to ensure the "completeness and accuracy" of the telephone answering system, which will relieve residents of the need to dial any of three separate 10-digit emergency numbers to access police, fire and ambulance services.
Once 911 is activated, simply dialing the number will re-route calls to the E-Comm 911 primary dispatch centre in Vancouver, according to the release. Trained operators at the centre will determine what kind of emergency there is and which services need to be dispatched out.
Residents of these areas, which also include Birken, N'Quatqua and D'Arcy, are asked to ensure they have correct street addresses posted outside their homes that can easily be seen from the road so that emergency services can access them.
