Friendship Trail endorsed

The Village of Pemberton passed a motion to endorse the Mt. Currie-Pemberton Friendship Trail. The project is an initiative of Sea to Sky Leadership program members Sheldon Tetreault, Jordan Sturdy, Maureen Douglas and Nathalie Klein.

The proposed 7.2 km trail would join the two communities running primarily along the CN Rail right of way.

Inspiration for the trail came to the team via the "Winds of Change: A Healing Vision" report. The report, a joint initiative of the Pemberton/Mount Currie Drug and Alcohol Task Force focusing on the creation of healthier communities, was presented last fall.

In addressing the motion, Mayor Elinor Warner, expressed enthusiasm that the trail proposal fit so well with the Winds of Change and acted to reaffirm that the report was a living document.

The Squamish-Lillooet regional District endorsed the Mt.Currie-Pemberton Friendship trail in early May. The SLRD will be meeting with CN to discuss the trail proposal.

Skate park gets OK

Skateboarders will have a more exciting summer this year thanks to Pemberton Agricultural and the Village of Pemberton. Both PACA and VOP have approved using one-third of the existing outdoor ice arena for the skate park.

Features for the park will include a 20 by 20 foot halfpipe, constructed last month in the land adjacent to the Pemberton Library. The agreement is contingent on the Pemberton Skateboard Society developing and posting "rules of conduct" at the site.

The three involved parties will revisit the arrangement at the end of August: PACA, the VOP and the PSS.

One Mile more accessible

A new concrete ramp has been constructed at One Mile Lake to make the recreation area more wheelchair accessible. A wheelchair-friendly picnic table will be installed within the next two to three weeks, according to Dave Allen, director of development service for the Village of Pemberton.

These accessibility projects were made possible through a grant from the Rick Hansen Foundation.
