Strawberry fields forever

Pemberton Valley strawberries are ripe for the picking. That’s the official word from Jason McEwan of McEwan’s Farm and Jordan Sturdy of North Arm Farm. Both farms offer berry fans a choice of U-pick or pre-picked berries from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily,

"If you call ahead, we’ll make sure that your berries are ready," said McEwan, adding, "And if you’re going to pick your own we suggest you bring your own containers. We have some, but they tend to run out pretty fast."

McEwan’s Farm cultivates approximately five acres of strawberries and given the state of this year’s harvest, getting your fill shouldn’t be a problem. U-pick costs $1.25 a pound, while pre-picked berries will run you $2.00 a pound. The farm is located at 7752 Meadows Road. Berries can be pre-ordered by calling 604-894-6063.

Up the other end of the Valley, things are looking just as good at North Arm Farm which also incorporates the berries into some of the delicious pastries it makes on its onsite bakery.

"The berries are beautiful and they’ll be great for another two to three weeks," said Sturdy.

U-pick at the natural (non-chemical) farm costs $1.50 a pound, with picked berries a dollar more.

"They’re grown without herbicides, pesticides or fungicides," explained Sturdy. "This means you have to process them within a day or two. If you want a berry to last a week, you have to use a fungicide."

North Arm Farm is located at 1888 Highway 99 and can be contacted at 604-894-5379.
