Pemberton will receive funding that will be put towards development of a playground accessible for all community children, regardless of their abilities.
The Rick Hansen Foundation is providing $50,000 towards the playground out of its “Let’s Play” initiative, a project that aims to creative inclusive play spaces for children with disabilities.
Funding from the $2.5 million initiative, launched in 2007 with funding from the Ministries of Education and Children and Family Development, is expected to go towards the Pemberton Accessible Playground, a space that will “foster full participation by community children,” according to a news release.
“It’s important that we all work together to make our communities accessible and inclusive for everyone,” said Rick Hansen, President and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation, in a statement.
“We’re thrilled that accessible play spaces are being created throughout the province, allowing children with disabilities to integrate and play together with their peers and enjoy their childhood.”
The Pemberton Accessible Playground is one of 20 funding recipients along with elementary schools in communities such as Chilliwack, Sechelt and 100 Mile House.
The “Let’s Play” initiative is administered by the SCI Solutions Alliance, a national organization that works to make a difference in the lives of people with spinal cord injuries (SCIs). Grants are distributed in two funding cycles — the next will be in September of 2008.
