Busy weekend for local RCMP, Winterfest without incident

By Cindy Filipenko

Pemberton Winterfest weekend proved a busy one for the local RCMP detachment, although the festival itself was without incident.

Cpl. Paul Vadik reported that crimes included criminal harassment, trespassing and assault, along with three impaired driving charges. In all cases the individuals had blood alcohol levels higher that .08. One driver was also charge with driving while prohibited.

A 29-year-old man has been charged with criminal harassment for allegedly harassing and following a 14-year-old local girl. The man, Jonathan Cartwright of Pemberton, was arrested after the investigation resulted in a warrant being issued for his arrest. Remanded in North Vancouver after his initial appearance in court, Cartwright will face the bench again on Feb. 15. The name of the young woman cannot be released as she is a minor.

A man was arrested Feb. 9 on Larch Street after residents complained of having seen him lurking in vehicles in the Vinyl Village street. RCMP charged 24-year-old Clinton Hundeby with two counts of trespassing. Hundeby, who was released with conditions, is scheduled to appear in Pemberton Provincial Court on Feb 22.

On the night of Feb. 12, Pemberton RCMP responded to two domestic disturbance calls. In each case, victims suffered non-life threatening injuries. Two Pemberton adults were arrested and are now facing charges of assault causing bodily harm.

And finally, Pemberton became a thirstier place with the suspension of the Pemberton Hotel pub’s liquor license. Charges against the establishment stemmed from a number of Liquor Act infractions that involved overcrowding, allowing intoxicated persons to remain on the premises and over-serving.

In this matter the police were acting on complaints received from the public pertaining to “the flagrant over service of liquor to patrons.” In reaction, the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch suspended the pub’s license for 19 days. The drinking establishment will be closed from Feb. 16 to March 2.
