Pemberton transfer station development expedited

Carney's gets contract

In a few, short weeks Pemberton residents will no longer have to slink into Whistler to use its trash compactors.

After years of discussion, Pemberton’s getting a waste transfer station Sept. 1. In addition to current recycling apparatus, the new transfer station, located in the Industrial Park, will offer trash compactors, a tire disposal service, appliance drop-off and a re-use it centre

The contract was awarded earlier this year to local contractor Alan LeBlanc and Squamish-based Owen Carney, of Carney’s Waste Management. To accommodate contractual conditions that require the existing site be moved by September, the development process had to expedited.

"The waste transfer station needs to be operating by Sept. 1 to satisfy terms of the contract. They have to decommission the (transfer station) at the gateway to town to allow things to move ahead and get the operation going while we deal with the actual development and building permits," said Richard Diamond, building inspector for the VOP.

With his course of action supported by the village’s solicitor, mayor and council agreed with staff to proceed by essentially ignoring process to accommodate the project.

Diamond elaborated on his recommendation saying that the project was conforming to zoning use and that the developer had made his intentions in writing to acquire all proper permits within a timely fashion.
