Pemberton water restriction in place

Pumps running almost 24 hours a day

Pemberton needs to cut back on its water usage. Pumps are running 23 out of 24 hours a day and the village is requesting resident support in the conservation of water.

"If the pump goes down, we’ll be short of water, to put it politely," said Russell Mack, manager of public works.

David Allen, director of development services, has previously put the community’s estimated water reserve at 12 hours.

"We’re asking that people with odd number addresses water their lawns on Wednesday and Saturday from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., while even number addresses can sprinkle on Thursdays and Sundays," said Sheena Fraser, deputy clerk.

Both Fraser and Mack say that watering plants using watering cans is fine any time, it’s the continuous running of garden hoses and sprinklers the VOP wants to stem.

"From the fire department’s point of view, we have water at our disposal in the event of a real emergency," said Mack, who is also Pemberton’s fire chief.

Resources the fire department can draw on include water trucks from Lizzie Bay and Polaris.

The water restrictions are expected to be in place throughout the summer or until substantial rainfall dictates otherwise.

"There’s not a lot of rain in the forecast for the next two weeks," said Mack.

This marks the first time the community has implemented water restrictions.
