The Pemberton Wildlife Association (PWA) is asking the public to come forward with any information on an incident that saw a moose stuck and killed on the Lillooet River Forest Service Road in late January.

According to Allen McEwan, president of the PWA, an adult cow moose and her unborn fetus were struck at the 12.5 kilometre mark of the road.

McEwan said the Upper Lillooet River valley is the southern extremity of moose habitat in B.C.

"There are 30 to 35 up in that area today, depending on how many we have lost over the winter, and that's based on recent aerial surveys by the (provincial) biologists," he said, explaining that the population is precarious.

The loss of a pregnant cow moose is particularly detrimental to the population, he added.

"Every time you loose an animal, particularly a breeding female, it's a really significant loss," he said. "We lost two moose that day—and we potentially lost all of the calves she could have had in her lifespan.”

McEwan is urging the public to come forward if they know anything about what happened. Pieces of a vehicle and headlight were found at the scene of the incident, he added.

"I'd like to see whoever is responsible for the death of this poor moose to come forward and tell us exactly what happened so that we can make sure it never happens again," said McEwan.
