1) Why are you running for mayor?
Pemberton needs to move forward with someone who will put the
needs of the community first. I believe I am that person. With my proven
community involvement, I feel I know what Pembertonians want and I feel I am in
a position to see that through in an efficient manner. The support I have
received from local residents has been overwhelming and encouraging.
2) What is your vision for Pemberton?
I want to see a Pemberton where people can not only live, but
work and play as well. We need to bolster this community so that we are more
self-sufficient, economically and recreationally. Be that in developing more
jobs through the promotion of growth as well as developing recreational
facilities. Extending the village boundaries would give us more tax revenue to
positively impact the village’s revenue streams, allowing us to provide better
services.
3) What are the biggest issues facing Pemberton?
We obviously are in great need of more child-care facilities as
the population of Pemberton continues to increase, and they need to be at an
affordable level for all working families. We need to draw more industry and
business to the community to help keep local money in the community. A cohesive
vision for where this community is going and a council that is willing to move
forward with this vision.
4) How can the Pemberton Festival benefit the village?
The Pemberton Festival helps the community in many ways some of
which are: we are drawing international attention to the area thereby driving a
year-round tourism industry. It also injects a significant amount of money into
the local economy, from the people attending the festival, to the production
team putting on the event. It also gave local entrepreneurs the opportunity to
showcase their businesses, from farmers to artists.
5) Name three things you expect to accomplish during
council's term:
Extend the village’s boundaries to help establish a larger tax
base and therefore have the resources to help promote and create more local
businesses, to establish a stronger local economy. Create more affordable
child-care facilities in the village. Work to establish more recreational
opportunities to the benefit of everyone in the valley.
6) How is the world economic slowdown likely to impact
Pemberton?
Pemberton may feel some effects from the economic slowdown, but
B.C. as a whole has a strong economy. With just over a year left until the
Olympics we have a lot of development in the Sea to Sky corridor which
obviously Pemberton is benefiting from. There has been no obvious downturn in
the local economy, and businesses seem to still be doing quite well, so long as
we continue to move forward with economic strategies.
7) What kind of role should Pemberton play in the 2010
Olympics?
We are obviously not the spotlight of the 2010 Games, but that doesn’t mean we will not be noticed. We are a supporting community to Whistler during that time, be it in lending accommodation to visitors who are taking in the events, hosting media and showcasing our village. Our businesses will prosper during that time and our infrastructure will surely be utilized during the Olympic period.
