Pensions get approval Two controversial pension applications were given third reading by council Monday, which caused one emotional neighbourhood resident to charge the public hearing for the proposals was a farce. "People living here have no say," Gail Nichols said after council unanimously approved the pension at 2176 Kathleen Place. "It’s not finished yet," warned Tony Kingsmill, another area resident. Opponents of the Kathleen Place pension and another proposed for 2828 Clifftop Lane in Millar’s Pond packed council chambers at a public hearing on the two proposals in January. Before voting on either pension proposal Monday Councillor Dave Kirk made a point of questioning planning staff about who has the right to rezone. Planner Caroline Hicks, whose report to council responded to many of the points raised by opponents at the public hearing, told Kirk any property owner has the right to apply for rezoning. If the request is consistent with policies in the Official Community Plan it will be considered. Councillors noted following the meeting that Whistler is a resort community and increasing tourist accommodation is part of the OCP. It was noted that council has more control over a pension than over a club cabin, which the owner could build. It was also pointed out that once pension zoning is granted no other pension applications will be considered in the immediate neighbourhood.
