It didn’t take long for the last Phat Wednesday race of the season to become a classic, with racers removing their chains while putting on costumes to wind up of the series in style.

The last event was a chainless downhill on A-Line on Aug. 27, with 130 racers taking part. The chainless part means that riders had to start under their own power, be light on the brakes, and pump through the features on the course to generate speed.

The highlights in the costume department include Derek Huddle as Duff Man from the The Simpsons, and Tom Hey and Simon Miller revisiting their Cheateau Loonie race chops to do the race on a tandem bike.

Attila Avsar won the masters category, despite a crash on course that robbed him of all his speed. Tyler Allison was the top junior with a time that was in the top-10 overall, while Rebecca McQueen was the only woman to break the four-minute mark. The men’s event went to Adam Billinghurst, who won an earlier chainless race on B-Line.

Sram provided the first 125 riders to register with free downhill chains for participating, and draw prizes included items from sponsors at Kokanee, Sram, Cambelback, WTB, Fox, Race Face, Hayes, and GBB.

Some of the highlights of the season include the largest field ever (over 200 racers in the B-Line event), the largest field of female racers at an event, and an average of 150 riders each week through the season.
