Pique nominated for Jack Webster journalism award

News stories on Whistler Blackcomb going public recognized for excellence

Pique Newsmagazine has been nominated for a Jack Webster journalism award in the Community Reporting category.

"Whistler Blackcomb Goes Public" was a series of stories, which ran in the fall and winter of 2010, looking at the move by the owner's of Whistler Blackcomb to take it public on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The series looked at not just the business angle but also how the move would impact the community.

UBC Journalism graduate Jesse Ferreras, who has been with Pique for over three years, wrote all of the articles.

Also nominated in the category are Tyler Olsen of the Chilliwack Times for "Growing Concern" a look into marijuana grow-ops in the area, and Jon Steinman
of Kootenay Co-op Radio CJLY for an investigation titled "Local Food Fraud?"

CTV's Lloyd Robertson is the featured speaker at the awards dinner and CBC's Gloria Macarenko and Tony Parsons take on this year's hosting duties.

Winners will be announced at the 25th annual Jack Webster Awards dinner on October 24th at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Vancouver.

The late Jack Webster is one of B.C.'s best-known journalists. From 1947 to 1987, first in print, then in open-line radio and TV, he engaged a generation of British Columbians with his hard-hitting style of journalism.
