Whistler Street Entertainment August 2-8, 2002

Free entertainment happens all weekend throughout the village at Village Square, Village Common, Town Plaza Gazebo, and Mountain Square, with the emphasis on family fun. This week’s performers include:

• Tickles and Dots-A-Lot, a the mother-daughter team of clowns who present comedy sketches;

• Max-i-mime studied at Moscow’s Mirror Mime Company, won the National Mime Competition, the only deaf student in his class;

• Richard entertains with his jazzy, smoky-smooth clarinet accompanied by his father Phil Beynon on keyboards;

• Cousin Harley, a music trio, perform good old-fashioned rock-a-billy tunes with style.

• Reid Belstock uses his training as a circus clown with juggling to create a loveable, wacky persona that has been called the Jerry Lewis of juggling.

This week, the Wednesday night cabaret features Tickles and Dots-A-Lot, Richard and Phil Beynon, Max-i-mime and Reid Belstock. at the Town Plaza Gazebo from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

IN THE EVENING, WHEN THE DAY IS DONE

Who: Fruit

Where: GLC

Oz band band Fruit performs their "melodic pop-acoustic folk-electric rock" tonight at GLC. "Emotive, instinctive, that’s where all of our songwriting springs from," says singer/guitarist Susie Keynes. They perform songs from their most recent album, Live at the Basement , which was released in the US in June, and songs from previous albums Here for Days (2001), a "limited US release" and the live album, Shift (1998). "We want to connect with the audience, playing songs where we get them to sing back to us. We’re colour, vibrancy, and selection," says Keynes.

Extra lively covers from the trio at Dubh Linn Gate, an old Irish pub where you can feel the merriment over a pint of Guinness.

Songs on guitar from Colbourne, who performed at the first Whistler Talent Search earlier this year.

Who: Cameron Chu

Where: Bearfoot Bistro

Jazz music on piano from contemporary artist Chu, who plays nightly. Always a favourite place for casual diners and audiences enjoying a Friday evening cocktail.

Strippers take it all off, for your eyes only, at Das Boot Ballet. A post-work gathering for some.

What: Fresh Fridays featuring resident DJ R3

Where: Garfinkel’s

Local spinster DJ R3 plays a mix of mainly hip hop (Eminem to Swollen Members), with a touch of R&B, every Friday night. Live mixing some nights. Turntabling delights, all the time, every week.

Whistler’s rising star, DJ Keph is back scratching with the power of Thor’s hammer during Ninja Tune Friday.

What: Passion Fridays

Who brings out the passion in you? DJ Erin will titillate your senses with grinding house beats that will shake your booty and bring out the animal in you at Tommy Africa’s. Get the dancing shoes handy for 10 p.m.

Friday summer hours, 7 p.m.-2 a.m., featuring Peacefrog with familiar tunes from the latest Top 40 charts.

PUBS & PATIOS

Where: Citta’

Looking for someone? Citta’s central attracts locals and visitors as traditionally the best people watching spot in Village Square. Enjoy a variety of pints on tap and chat about the ball game. Open for lunch; low key candlelight dining upstairs into the summer evening.

Where: The Brew House

Brewhouse tunes are always hopping, from morning to night. Outdoor patios make for great people watching in the village. Near all the bars, clubs and shops in between Marketplace and central Village Square.

Where: Hoz’s Pub

Hoz’s is still open during the Lake Placid Road construction extravaganza. Easily accessible by mountain bike, ATV or canoe. Cut through the Creekside dust and sit down for a cool one at Hoz’s.

Where: Amsterdam Pub & Café

A funky place for a pint, a martini, or a meal, overlooking the Village Square. Live music some nights. For an international, younger crowd visit the ’Dam.

Where: Black’s Pub

The warming floor for locals apres-ski. Located at the foot of both village gondolas. With snow-capped peaks and the mountain bike park in the background, enjoy their telescope to bear watch or star gaze. Tasty food, 99 brands of beer in a gilded silver menu, and 40 scotches to keep you reminiscing.

Where: Tapley’s Neighbourhood Pub

Casual atmosphere for warm conversation and cold beer. Bar staff operate a not-too-loud sound system of rock and roll numbers and the outdoor patio gives patrons the best air in the world.

Saturday, Aug. 3

LIVING LIVELY TUNES

Who: Fargo

Where: Dusty’s Patio, 3-6 p.m.

Lively blues and southern rock from band Fargo, who provide the music backdrop to the Canadian National Barbeque Championships at Dusty’s all weekend long. Bongo Rich is on drums, Dominic Ziau handles vocals and acoustic guitar, and John Sarkis is on guitar back up.

Wilson, who has been pursuing music since 1997, made her first appearance at The Gate in Vancouver in 1998, where she released her debut full length CD, Underwater .
