AIKO AIKO ONE DAY

Whistler locals Dark Star perform "a tribute to Gerry Garcia" with covers like Tangled Up in Blue and Roll Me Down the Line. The kind of music that always makes you want to take a road trip or come to the show to be travellin without movin. Dark Star has also played under the name Solid Earth Band and the Solid Earth Jam Band. The lineup includes founder Douglas Kerr, who has been writing and performing in B.C. venues for the last 10 years. Dark Star was his first band, established in Whistler in the 90s. In 1998 Kerr produced his first EP "The Smoke's Gettin Thick" at Beatty Lane Studios in Vancouver. The recording included b-3 player Jordan White and Vancouver guitarist Todd Taylor. Local percussionist Billy Hume (Groove Junky) also plays with Dark Star. After two solid years of sold out shows and introducing a slew more originals, Kerr changed the band name from Dark Star to Solid Earth Band and produced his first full length CD, Mountain Sites . The CD includes Zubot & Dawson on Lap steel, mandolin and violin. The band played Victoria, The Slocan Valley and Vancouver in 2001 and a sold out show New Years Eve at the Boot Pub in Whistler. Covers at previous shows have included Aiko Aiko and Bob Dylans When I Paint My Masterpiece. Originals include Flying High, I'll Never Know, and In the Hands of a thief.

Tapleys bartender and sports aficionado John Chalk is on the rebound after an emergency liver transplant last month. To help him out with mounting medical and living expenses there are a series of events at Tapleys and Bills on Sept. 9. At noon at Tapleys there is a silent auction that includes golf packages and carvings. The auction continues through the Monday Night Football game (Pittsburgh vs. New England) at 6 p.m. At 9 p.m. the doors open at Bills (admission by donation) where there will be a huge draw for prizes, including $1,000 cash or a car. Tickets are $20. At midnight theres another draw, for one RCI week, donated by Whiski Jack Resorts. Tickets for this draw are $10.

The festivities include a tug of war competition in the bar between emergency services personnel teams. Tickets are $5 at the door. Proceeds go to fallen members families in New York and to the Vancouver Firefighter Combat Team to compete in the World Firefighter Combat Challenge event later this year.
