Pique Newsmagazine is the best newspaper in Canada in its circulation category, taking first place in the Canadian Community Newspaper Awards for Best All-Round Newspaper, Best Front Page, and Best Editorial Page for 2018. Winners were announced on July 16.

In all, Pique won 10 awards in the national competition, which celebrates the best in community publishing from across the country. Newspapers of similar circulation size compete against each other and are judged by a panel of industry experts.

"Pique's team strives at all times to tell the stories that matter to our readers," said editor Clare Ogilvie.

"The newsmagazine has a crackerjack team of news, sports, entertainment and social media reporters along with amazing columnists and contributors, and a creative production team, all of whom are committed to the best in journalism. Recognition by our peers through these awards is humbling and inspiring.

"This is all possible because we live in a place with such a supportive community—this is what allows us to pursue stories and stay relevant—and we are very grateful."

Added Whistler Publishing LP and Pique publisher Sarah Strother: "It's an honour to be top of class with this award from News Media Canada. We are committed to quality community journalism and everyone at Pique takes great pride in this acknowledgement from our peers that we're doing it right."

Pique's Braden Dupuis took first in the Environmental Writing category for his running coverage of the wildfire issue in and around Whistler—timely considering his cover feature this week, which can be found on page 40.

Production Manager Karl Partington also took first for Best Photo Illustration for his "Party Town B.C.," Pique cover (www.piquenewsmagazine.com/whistler/party-town-bc/Content?oid=3432241). Pique took second in this category as well thanks to Art Director Jon Parris' cover "The Dirty Side of Whistler." (www.piquenewsmagazine.com/whistler/the-dirty-side-of-whistler/Content?oid=4044060)

Reporter Joel Barde took third in the Best Feature category for his story "The Last Hunt," in which he told of his experience going on one of the last grizzly bear trophy hunts before they were banned last year (www.piquenewsmagazine.com/whistler/the-last-hunt/Content?oid=5794227).

Pique contributor Laurie Cooper took second in the Business Writing category for her cover feature "Swarmed," which explored the challenges of overtourism, as Whistler and other resorts face swelling global tourism. (www.piquenewsmagazine.com/whistler/swarmed/Content?oid=5291759).

Pique took third in two other categories, Best Feature Series and Best Sports Coverage.

Reporter Brandon Barrett's compelling article investigating drink spiking and related issues, "Invisible Violations" took the feature-series third (www.piquenewsmagazine.com/whistler/invisible-violations/Content?oid=2875638), while sports editor Dan Falloon's award recognized his thorough coverage of sports in Whistler and Pemberton.
