Pitch In Day turns 20

Community groups cleaning up roadside litter April 25

It's been 20 years since the RMOW roads department organized the first Pitch In Day to clean the litter from Whistler's roadsides that piled up over the winter. The event was held as a way to raise awareness of litter issues in the community, as well as to reward local groups and associations who receive a small grant from the municipality for helping out.

Community groups, sports association and others are invited to take part in the 20 th anniversary event on Saturday, April 25. It only takes a few hours, and the municipality provides gloves, bags and other supplies to help groups clean up the town one road at a time. Full bags can be left on the side of the road, which will be collected by municipal workers in the afternoon.

Groups usually work from 9 a.m. to noon, picking up their supplies at the municipal works yard from 8 a.m. onwards.

You can join a group that fits your interests, or volunteer to help out whichever group is cleaning your neighbourhood.

Everyone who participates is invited to the Pitch In Day barbecue, hosted by the Whistler Fire Fighters Association at the village fire hall, with food and drinks donated by local grocery stores.

There will be a group at work in every neighbourhood, from Emerald to Function Junction:

The Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment (AWARE) is once again taking on White Gold and Nesters areas.

The Whistler Girl Guides and Trex are cleaning Nordic and upper Whistler Cay Heights, while their counterparts at Boy Scouts and Clubs are cleaning Alpine South.

The Whistler Soccer Club is cleaning Whistler Creek and Function Junction.

Whistler Taekwondo is cleaning Tapley's and lower Whistler Cay.

A local softball team, The Dregs, are cleaning Emerald Estates.

The Whistler Fire Fighters Association is cleaning Alpine North.

The Whistler Tennis Association is cleaning The Benchlands.

The Village iHosts are taking on the village Day Skier Lots.

A group is still being confirmed for Bayshores.

New this year, realtor Susie Frank at Whistler Real Estate, WAG and the Mountain Hound Lounge are sponsoring an April Stool Day on Pitch In Day, asking volunteers to walk the Valley Trail to remove dog waste.

In addition to Pitch In Day, the municipality is also hosting a free dump day at the Waste Transfer Station in the Callaghan Valley. All household waste with the exception of drywall will be accepted at no charge.
