Police report

Busy long weekend for RCMP

The Whistler RCMP were busy over the long weekend, answering 22 noise complaints and 13 bear calls.

No bears were destroyed, and non-lethal aversion techniques were used in 75 per cent of the cases.

There were four drug seizures, all involving small amounts of marijuana.

The RCMP also responded to four fights in the village, including at a local nightclub.

There were five motor vehicle accidents – no serious injuries, but alcohol was suspected as a factor in three of them. In addition, the RCMP handed down 10 24-hour driving prohibitions.

The Pemberton Barn Dance went more smoothly this year with the hiring of a private security company to watch over the event. Police roadblocks on Portage Road and Meadows Road resulted in just three 24-hour driving prohibitions.

There was also a rash of thefts in the Whistler day parking lots, with four vehicles broken into between the evening of Aug. 1 and 7 a.m. the following morning. Stolen items include CDs, bags, and other personal items. The RCMP remind people to never leave their valuables in vehicles.

In addition, eight individuals were arrested for being drunk in public. Two were from Mount Currie, two were from Whistler and the remainder were from the Lower Mainland. All but one were males, and one was underage.
