Mass ATV theft on Whistler Mountain

A fleet of 20 four-wheel All Terrain Vehicles was stolen from the base of Whistler Mountain, near the Fitzsimmons Bus Loop, in the early morning of Oct. 6. According to the RCMP the ATVs are newer model Yamahas and Bombardiers, and are either red or green in colour.

The estimated value of the machines is approximately $100,000.

"It’s a large amount, which is why we’re guessing that they might still be in the area," said Constable Devon Jones of the Whistler RCMP. "We have an ongoing investigation with our support network, and we’re hoping someone saw something that could be of assistance to us. We don’t know what kind of truck or trucks we’re looking for yet."

Snowmobiles and ATVs have been stolen from the site in the past, including four ATV’s at this time last year.

According to Doug Washer, the owner and operator of Canadian Snowmobile Adventures, the thieves cut through a series of locks and cables that secured the machines. The thieves couldn’t have started the ATVs without the keys, although it is possible to hotwire the ignitions.

"If you know what you’re doing you can take anything, even a car with an alarm. I guess if people really want them, they’re going to find a way," said Washer.

Although the theft will have an impact on business, Washer says that CSA is still up and running "with the majority of our fleet. It’s lucky that it’s the slower time of year for Whistler, although that might be how they got away with it, but we’ll still be out doing tours."

CSA will also look into making new security arrangements.

"We have to look into that for sure, and see what resources we can use. We have to change our practices for the future, that’s for sure," said Washer.

If you saw or heard anything suspicious, contact the Whistler RCMP at 604-932-3044.
